"Between Dream and Reality"


DOME is a company that enjoys creating cars.  In the last 47 years (as of 2012) since Minoru Hayashi, the President of Dome, built his first racecar, and 37 years (as of 2012) since Dome was registered officially as a company, we have built cars ranging from racecars and sports cars to saloon cars, vans, trucks, electric vehicles and even solar powered cars.
Our business includes styling design, engineering design, prototyping, testing and racing activities.  Considering the actual size of our company, you could say DOME is overambitious to have such a wide range of business.  We constructed a 50%-scale wind tunnel, "Fu-Ryu-Sha" in Maibara-shi in 2000, and founded a carbon-composite engineering and manufacturing company, DOME Carbon Magic Co., Ltd in Mishima-shi in the following year so the two important elements in a racecar engineering, aerodynamics and CFRP components, can be developed in-house.
Even though DOME has established one of the best organisations as a racecar constructor with those facilities, being a racecar constructor is not enticing as a business.  It is rather money pit actually.
DOME was aware of it but still wanted to create racecars.  As a solution for the financial difficulties, DOME Carbon Magic expanded its business from racecar-only to other engineering sectors so we can inject the profit from DOME Carbon Magic to racecar development programmes.  In 2005, DOME HQ in Kyoto and Dome Carbon Magic in Mishima-shi were moved to Maibara-shi, Shiga, where "Fu-Ryu-Sha" had been.  DOME also founded DOME Composite Thailand in Thai.
It might sound to you that DOME separates its hobby and business clearly in the structure, but it is NOT.  The CFRP technology DOME Carbon Magic uses actually derives from the racecar development DOME has engaged in.  Even now the racecar designers, who have joined the DOME group because they wants to design racecars, takes the responsibility for the most difficult part of CFRP design.  If we had been just a CFRP manufacturing company, we wouldn't have had the engineering ability we actually have gained.
Sadly the business as a pure racecar constructor has not been able to be stand-alone, but the projects as a racecar constructor have equipped us with the engineering competence including advanced technologies such as CFRP lightweight structure design and aerodynamics.  The relationship between DOME and DOME Carbon Magic has been like wheels on a car.  If either of the wheels comes off, a car won't move.  If either DOME or DOME Carbon Magic did not exist, DOME group wouldn't be as strong as we are now.
DOME will continue growing appreciating the synergy effect.  We will keep applying the technology gained from car racing, which we enjoy most, to the other engineering business.

Hiroshi Fushida has taken over the presidency of DOME from myself, Minoru Hayashi, the founder of the company, since September 2012.
It is not a generation change because Fushida and I graduated from the same school in the same year and have been sworn friends sharing ambition in professional motorsport.  My intention is to bring DOME to the next stage by appointing Fushida with proper business acumen the President of the company.  In another selfish word, it is the better way to get more money in the late stage of my life.  Let's see if my "oldster's dream" comes true or ends up being a pie in the sky.
